Haaruitval door anabolen: wat je moet weten
Inhoudsopgave

On almost every bodybuilding forum, you’ll come across it. Someone starts a cycle and a few months later notices their hair thinning. Is that a coincidence, is it due to the cycle, or was it going to happen anyway? Usually, it's a combination. Anabolics can accelerate hair loss, but not for everyone, and not in the same way with every substance.

What anabolics do to your hair

Most anabolic steroids increase your androgen levels in one way or another. Part of this is converted in your body into DHT, the hormone also responsible for common hereditary hair loss. DHT binds to receptors in your hair follicles, causing them to gradually shrink. The hair that subsequently grows is thinner and shorter until the follicles eventually stop producing altogether.

This process already plays a role in men who don't use anabolics. What anabolics do is accelerate this process by significantly increasing the amount of DHT in your body. In a few months, you'll experience androgen levels that your body would normally never reach.

Not every anabolic works the same way

There's a big difference between anabolics when it comes to hair loss. Proviron and Winstrol are easily converted into DHT and are therefore considered riskier. Trenbolone is often mentioned in the same breath, although the mechanism there is slightly different, and less research has been done on it.

Testosterone itself and Dianabol aromatize more and therefore generally cause fewer DHT-related complaints, although this varies greatly per person. An anabolic substance that certainly has no effect on your hair doesn't exist. Anyone who claims otherwise is selling you too simple a story.

Why it happens to one person and not another

Most of the difference lies in your sensitivity to DHT, not in the amount you produce. This sensitivity is determined by your genes, not by which cycle you do. If you have men with bald heads in your family, there's a greater chance that your hair follicles will react more intensely to a peak in DHT. If you don't have that predisposition, you often notice little to nothing, even with heavier cycles.

That's also why advice differs so much from forum to forum. One user goes through several cycles without noticing anything, while another clearly sees more hair in the shower within a few months. Both stories are true; they just concern different bodies.

Three recurring misconceptions

A common misconception is that only heavy cycles cause hair loss. That's not true: even a light or short cycle can make a noticeable difference in someone with a strong predisposition. It's not about how much you take, but how sensitive your hair follicles are to the resulting peak.

Another persistent idea is that you're not at risk if you don't notice anything now. Hair follicles can slowly shrink for years before you see it in the mirror, so a cycle that has no visible effect now may have already started that process.

And then there's the assumption that stopping the cycle automatically restores your hair. Sometimes it does, especially if the hair follicles haven't really shrunk yet. But with longer or repeated exposure to high DHT levels, some of the loss is permanent, just like with common hereditary hair loss.

How do you know if it's really due to the cycle?

Hair loss from anabolics resembles common hereditary hair loss, but at a faster rate. You usually see a receding hairline or a crown that thins out faster than you would expect based on your age. This is different from telogen effluvium, temporary hair loss due to stress or illness, where your hair thins all over your head instead of in the typical areas.

If you're in doubt, a simple photo often says more than your gut feeling. Take a photo of your hairline and crown every few months, in the same light and from the same angle. Hair loss often feels more dramatic than it appears in photos, and conversely, a change you don't notice yourself can certainly be visible there.

What you can do about it

Stopping the substance causing the peak is the most direct step, but that's not an option many users are open to. Understandable. What remains are two routes: medication that inhibits DHT production, or an approach that tries to support the hair follicles themselves.

Finasteride and dutasteride inhibit DHT throughout your body, but in doing so, they sometimes also inhibit some of the hormonal effects for which you are doing the cycle. Many users therefore consciously skip this route. If you are in doubt, a conversation with a doctor or dermatologist is more honest here than a forum post, especially if you are also using other medication.

A local approach, such as a serum with Redensyl, does not interfere with your hormonal balance. It works at the level of the hair follicles themselves by supporting them in the growth phase. The Hairborn Growth Serum is an example of this. It doesn't fully compensate for the DHT peak of a cycle, but it can make the difference between visibly thinner hair and a hairline that remains reasonably stable. A derma roller can improve the absorption of a serum by gently stimulating the scalp, which provides some users with that little extra. Expect at least three to four months before you can honestly evaluate anything. Hair growth is slow, with or without a cycle.

The honest truth

For most people, hair loss isn't the only concern with anabolic use, nor is it the biggest. But it is the concern that stands out the most, because you see it in the mirror every day. If you're sensitive to DHT, there's a real chance that a cycle will accelerate that process. That's no reason for panic, but it is a reason to take it seriously as soon as you notice it, instead of hoping it'll be fine.

Those who act early simply have more options. Waiting until the crown clearly thins makes it harder to reverse anything.

Frequently asked questions

Can you test beforehand if you are sensitive before starting?

No, there is no reliable test that predicts in advance how sensitive your hair follicles are to a peak in DHT. Family history of hair loss does provide an indication, but not certainty.

Is hair loss due to anabolics equally fast in every user?

No, that varies greatly. In some users, a difference can be seen within a few months, in others it takes years before anything noticeable changes, or it doesn't happen at all. This is related to individual genetic sensitivity.

Can you use a serum preventively before a cycle?

Yes, you can. A serum with ingredients that support the hair follicle can be integrated into your routine before starting a cycle, although there is no guarantee that this will compensate for the DHT peak of the cycle itself.

Does the duration of a cycle affect the severity of hair loss?

Yes, generally, a longer period of increased DHT exposure puts more cumulative stress on sensitive hair follicles than a short cycle, although individual sensitivity remains the biggest determining factor.

Can you see with a blood test how much DHT a cycle causes in you?

A blood test can measure your overall DHT level but does not directly indicate how much of that is specifically due to a particular cycle or how your hair follicles locally react to it. It provides an indication, not a complete answer.

Is there a difference in risk between oral and injectable anabolics?
