You're doing everything right. You eat healthily, you use a serum, you manage stress. Yet, you notice your hair isn't improving, or is even thinning. There's one factor missing from most checklists: how you sleep.

In recent years, there's been increasing research into the relationship between sleep and hair loss. Not just as a random claim on a forum, but in published studies. It's time to find out what these studies really say and how you can practically apply that knowledge.

What happens to your scalp at night

During the night, your body goes through several sleep cycles, including deep sleep and REM sleep. Growth hormone is released during deep sleep phases, which plays a role in cell repair throughout your body, including in the hair follicle. Your blood circulation also changes during sleep, affecting how much oxygen and nutrients your hair follicles receive.

What the research shows

Two recent studies are relevant here.

The role of cortisol

If you sleep too little or irregularly, your body produces more cortisol, your primary stress hormone. What you can do about it

A few nights of poor sleep due to a busy week are not a disaster. What matters is a pattern that persists for weeks to months. A few things that, according to sleep research (separate from hair loss), actually make a difference:

  • Wake up at a consistent time, even on weekends. That guides your circadian rhythm much more directly than when you go to bed.
  • Avoid bright light and screens in the hour before you go to sleep. Blue light suppresses melatonin production.
  • Limit caffeine after early afternoon. It stays in your system longer than most people think.
  • Keep your bedroom cool and dark. A lower body temperature helps with falling asleep.
  • Exercise during the day. People who exercise regularly generally fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply.

None of these points are a miracle cure for your hair. But a body that rests well also recovers better, and that's never bad news for your hair follicles.

Snoring and sleep apnea: an often-forgotten factor

There's another reason why sleep and hair loss are often mentioned together, and it's easily overlooked: sleep apnea. In this condition, your breathing stops briefly dozens of times a night, preventing your brain and body from truly entering deep sleep, even if you seem to be sleeping eight hours.

In the aforementioned Chinese study, snoring emerged as one of the behaviors that were more common in men with more severe hair loss. Snoring is not the same as sleep apnea, but it can indicate it. People with untreated sleep apnea receive less oxygen during the night, and that affects not only your heart and concentration but possibly also processes related to cell repair.
